Dr. Lewis’ retirement letter

June 28, 2017

Dear FBC Family and Friends,

While God is constant and eternal, our lives are made up of chapters that come and go.  Some are longer than others, some more exciting.  Whatever their quality or the story, the one thing they all have in common is that they come to an end.

First Baptist Church, Indianapolis, will close a chapter in our life together with the August retirement of our Senior Pastor, Dr. Frederick Lewis.  Fred and Connie have determined that God is calling them to their next chapter in life and we celebrate these transitions and look forward to our respective futures.

Prior to joining us on February 1, 2005, Fred served 28 years in active pastoral and denominational ministry. Dr. Lewis was ordained by First Baptist Church of Bethlehem, 3235 Linden Street, Bethlehem, PA (1977); Associate Minister, Fifth Avenue Baptist Church, 1135 5th Ave., Huntington, West Virginia (1977-1982); Senior Minister, Grace Baptist Church of Blue Bell, 437 W. Skippack Pike, Blue Bell, PA (1983-2004).

Fred has shepherded FBC through enormous change in these last twelve years.  He and Connie have been steadfast in their commitment to FBC, have fully explored and enjoyed Carmel and Indianapolis, compassionately guided us as we welcomed and loved our neighbors, and managed the “business of the church” through countless meetings, calls and reports.  They have become our golfing partners, supper club members, confidants and friends; we will certainly miss them.  Retirement, though, is a wonderful state and requires a thorough and joyful celebration of a career and life lived in God’s calling. To that end, please be with us on August 20th as we thank God for Fred’s service to Him and FBC and celebrate Fred and Connie’s new chapter in life.

We hope you can be with us for the worship service on August 20th which Fred will be leading; it starts at 10:00 a.m.  We will begin the celebration following the worship service at approximately 11:30 a.m.  We invite you to share in the catered lunch in the church gym.  Please help us use our resources wisely by notifying the church office that you will be having lunch with us and RSVP by August 13.

Following the luncheon, we will be presenting Fred and Connie with a gift and a memory book.   If you would like to make a financial donation toward this gift it would be appreciated.  A monetary donation (cash or check-memo line “Dr. Lewis’ retirement gift”) toward their gift can be placed in an envelope labeled “gift” and given to Jane Seigel or Janell Gurney or placed in a designated gift box located by the double doors as you enter the Sanctuary or by sending to the Church: First Baptist Church of Indianapolis, 8600 N. College Avenue, Indianapolis, IN  46240, c/o Debi Lawton.  Please note your gift contributions will not be tax deductible.

For the memory book, we ask that you write a note/card/letter for placement within a keepsake box that we will present to Fred on Sunday.  You might want to include a favorite memory and/or what Dr. Lewis’ ministry has meant to you and your family.  We anticipate that this keepsake box will be cherished for years to come.  If you are unable to attend, you may send this as well to the church office at the address above.

Thank you for taking the time to read this invitation in its entirety; in summary please consider…
RSVP to the church office your attendance at the luncheon.  Contribute a monetary donation toward a gift, and write a note/card/letter for inclusion in the memory book.

We hope to see you on Sunday, August 20th for this memorable occasion honoring our Senior Pastor.

In Christ,

Amy Griman
